10 things to know before you write your first novel
The beginner’s checklist for writing a novel that actually works
1. Why are you writing this?
Before anything else, ask yourself: Why this story? Why now? Is it something personal? A message you want to share? Or just a world that wont leave your mind?
Your reason will guide you when things get tough.
2. Who’s the main character?
Your main character doesn't need to be perfect but they do need to be interesting.
Give them wants, fears, flaws, and a voice.
Readers connect with people, not plots.
3. Whats the core idea?
Can you explain your story in one or two sentences?
That’s your premise. Example: A boy discovers he’s a wizard and must face the dark lord who killed his parents.
Simple. Memorable.
4. Plan or improvise?
Some writers outline every chapter (plotters). Others figure things out as they write (pantsers).
There’s no right way, just your way.
A small outline can help.
5. Conflict is everything
A story without conflict is like a movie without a plot.
What problem does your character face? What’s at stake?
Even slow stories need something pushing forward.
6. Setting matters
You dont need to invent an entire universe, but your setting should feel real.
A good setting can be like another character.
Where and when does your story happen?
7. Choose your point of view
Whos telling the story?
Is it in first person, third person, or an omniscient narrator?
The choice affects everything. Try a few and see what fits.
8. Your voice is your power
Don't try to sound like someone else.
What makes your story unique is how you see the world.
Your voice connects with readers. Use it.
9. Write first, edit later
Your first draft doesn't need to be good, it just needs to exist.
Dont over-edit while writing.
Finish it.
Then improve it. No novel starts perfect.
10. Finishing is just the beginning
Once you finish, take a break.
Come back with fresh eyes and edit.
Share with trusted readers.
